How to Cancel Spotify Premium: Steps for Your Billing Provider

You can use a browser on your iPhone, Android phone or computer. Start by checking who charges you, then use the matching steps below.

Check who bills your Spotify plan

Sign in to your Spotify account, open Manage your plan, and check Payment. This is where Spotify lists a partner's contact details if your plan is managed elsewhere. Check your latest payment receipt too. Spotify's billing-provider guidance.

You can also inspect your plan in the Spotify app: tap your profile picture, then Settings and privacy → Account → Billing. These are Spotify's documented steps for viewing plan and payment details.

Using an iPhone or signing in with Apple or Google doesn't identify your billing provider. Follow the company shown on your plan or receipt.

Cancel Spotify Premium on its website

Use these steps when Spotify handles your subscription, including on an iPhone or Android phone.

  1. Open Spotify.com in a browser and sign in to the account with Premium.
  2. Open the website's menu, profile or settings control, depending on the layout, then choose Account or View account. You can also open the account page directly.
  3. Open Manage your plan or Manage your subscription.
  4. Select Cancel subscription.
  5. Continue through the cancellation prompts until you reach the final confirmation message. Selecting an initial cancellation button isn't enough if another confirmation follows.
  6. Check your account's status using the confirmation table below.

Spotify's current cancellation instructions use Manage your plan and Cancel subscription. An older tutorial may show different labels. If you can't find the option, check the biller and account before trying another route.

Cancel Spotify Premium through Google Play

Spotify supports Google Play Billing on Android. Use this route only if Google Play manages your subscription.

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon and check that you're using the Google Account associated with the payment.
  3. Tap Payments & subscriptions.
  4. Tap Subscriptions.
  5. Select Spotify.
  6. Tap Cancel subscription.
  7. Follow the prompts and confirm the cancellation. Check the subscription's resulting status and end date.

If Spotify isn't listed, check your other Google accounts and the payment receipt. If Spotify bills you directly, use the website procedure instead. Our Google Play cancellation guide includes detailed steps, browser cancellation, troubleshooting and refund requests.

Cancel Spotify Premium through a partner

If a phone, internet or other partner manages your plan, use that company's cancellation process. Spotify's account page should point you to the provider under Payment.

  1. Sign in to your Spotify account.
  2. Open Manage your plan and check Payment for the partner's contact link.
  3. Open that provider's account portal or contact its support through the listed link.
  4. Find the Spotify plan or add-on and follow the provider's cancellation instructions. If there is no account control, ask its support to stop renewal of the Spotify plan or add-on. Confirm which part of your package will end.
  5. Get confirmation and the effective date from the provider, including whether removing Spotify affects any linked package.

Partner controls and contract terms can differ. Use Spotify's partner-billing guidance to find the company responsible for your payments.

Stop a Spotify automatic payment in PayPal

If you pay Spotify through PayPal, cancel the Spotify plan first using the website steps. You can separately revoke the PayPal automatic-payment authorization if you want to stop that payment arrangement.

  1. Sign in to PayPal in a browser.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Payments.
  4. Open Subscriptions and saved businesses or Automatic Payments.
  5. Select Spotify from the merchant list.
  6. Use the automatic-payment cancellation control, complete any prompts shown, and check the resulting status.

These steps follow PayPal's automatic-payment instructions. Check that the PayPal authorization is inactive and that Spotify shows cancellation too. Each status confirms a different action.

Check that Spotify Premium is canceled

Reopen your account and review Payment under your plan. Spotify describes these status meanings in its help for charges after cancellation.

Account statusWhat it means and what to do
A date for your next paymentCancellation isn't complete. Repeat the steps and reach the confirmation message.
A date when your account will switch to Spotify FreeCancellation succeeded. Your paid Premium access continues until that date.
Spotify FreeThis account has no Premium subscription being billed. If charges continue, check for another account.
A partner company is listedCheck cancellation and payment status with that provider.

Keep a copy of the confirmation and end date. For a Spotify-billed plan, Premium can keep working after cancellation during your paid period. Check the switch-to-Free date on the same account you canceled.

Cancel before renewal or a free trial ends

Spotify lets you cancel a direct Premium plan at any time. To prevent the next renewal, finish cancellation before your next billing date and verify the result. Spotify's terms say recurring subscriptions are billed on the first day of each billing period.

For a paid subscription, Premium normally remains available through the period you've already paid for. Canceling doesn't turn that paid month into a refund.

For a zero-priced free trial, Spotify says cancellation switches your account to Free immediately. That trial can't be reactivated. If you want to use the remaining trial time, check the renewal date and plan your cancellation before the charge; don't assume you can cancel now and keep every remaining trial day. Spotify's trial cancellation rule.

Check the billing date on your account. If another company manages payment, follow its deadline and confirmation requirements.

Check Family, Duo and linked benefits

For Family or Duo, the plan manager can cancel the whole plan. Other members lose Premium benefits from the next payment date, so tell them before confirming. A member who leaves the plan doesn't cancel the manager's subscription or stop its payment. Spotify's Family and Duo cancellation guidance.

Also review any benefits linked to your plan. Spotify says an existing non-student Premium with Hulu offer loses Hulu access if you cancel or move to another plan. That old offer is no longer available to new non-student subscribers, so don't assume you can restore it later. See Spotify's Hulu bundle guidance.

What to do if you can't cancel Spotify Premium

The Cancel button is missing or the page loops

Return to your account in a browser and check Payment. If a partner bills you, follow its route. For Family or Duo, check whether you're the plan manager or a member.

If Spotify bills you and you still can't finish, open Spotify's official contact page and select Message us. Explain which account and plan you're trying to cancel and what happens when you use the cancellation control. Ask for confirmation that renewal is off.

Use the cancellation process to stop paying. You don't need to delete your account as a workaround.

Your account says Free, but you're still being charged

A free account has no Premium plan to cancel. Check whether you used another email address or login method for the charged account. Compare your receipts and plan details, then use the procedure for the account and biller that match the charge.

If you already have a switch-to-Free date, a payment may have processed before you canceled. If a new completed charge appears after the confirmed end date, ask the biller to review it with your receipt and confirmation. Spotify explains these cases in its post-cancellation billing help.

You can't sign in to the billing account

Use Spotify's login-recovery guidance. You can reset your password or try possible email addresses you own. If you originally used Apple, Google or a phone-number login, try that method too.

If recovery doesn't resolve it, contact official support about the payment. Don't treat signing out or removing the app as confirmation that the subscription ended.

How to request a Spotify Premium refund

Cancellation stops future renewal; a refund request asks the biller to review an existing payment. Spotify's terms generally don't provide refunds or credits for partial subscription periods, except where required by law or expressly stated in the terms.

Canceling after 14 days doesn't automatically qualify you for a refund. Check the terms that apply to your payment and ask the biller to review it.

Keep your cancellation confirmation while the charge is reviewed, and check the correct biller's status before the next renewal.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose everything if I cancel my Spotify subscription?

No. You keep your playlists and saved music when your account switches to Free. Music downloads for offline listening require Premium; Free still allows podcast downloads. See Spotify's cancellation guidance and offline listening rules.

Is there a cancellation fee for Spotify?

Spotify's direct-subscription cancellation terms don't state a separate cancellation fee. A payment already made for the current period is a different issue from a cancellation fee. If you're billed through a partner, check that provider's contract before assuming the same terms apply.

Why is Spotify charging me twice a month?

Compare your receipts and the status of both payments. Spotify says possible explanations include a pending authorization, a retry after a failed payment, an earlier payment after changing to a higher-priced plan, or Premium on another account. If both charges are completed and unexplained, contact support. See Spotify's double-charge guidance.

Can I take a break from Spotify Premium?

You can cancel Premium, keep using your free account and resubscribe later. That doesn't preserve a canceled zero-priced trial or guarantee access to an old bundle offer. Spotify's billing-date guidance explains waiting until the account is free before starting a new subscription on a different billing date.

Do I need to close my Spotify account to stop paying?

No. Cancel Premium with your billing provider to stop renewal while keeping your account. Closing the account and deleting its data is a separate action, and Spotify says it removes access to purchased audiobooks and tickets for future events. See Spotify's account-closure guidance.
