You can request cancellation through Planet Fitness's online member portal, at your home club, or by mailing that club written notice. Local procedures can vary. Check three things separately: when your request arrives, when your membership ends, and whether a final payment remains. This guide covers US memberships billed directly by Planet Fitness. If you pay for someone else's membership, ask the club what authorization it needs before making a request.

Check your billing dates and membership terms
Find your Planet Fitness (PF) membership agreement and identify the home club that manages your account. Check these items before submitting your request:
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Monthly payment | To stop billing on the 17th, PF says your club must receive notice by the 10th. Billing changes may take up to seven business days. |
| Annual fee | To stop the annual fee, PF says your club must receive notice by the 25th of the month before it is due. |
| Minimum term (commitment length) | Find the commitment end date and check whether an early buyout applies. |
| Outstanding balance | Review any unpaid amounts and ask for an itemized explanation. |
Source: Planet Fitness FAQ → Membership & Billing → Show More → “How do I manage my membership?” → final paragraph.
Check your agreement and ask the club how these deadlines apply to your membership. State law may provide additional cancellation rights; see what to do if the club refuses.
For a hypothetical annual fee due November 1, the published receipt deadline would be October 25. Allow time for delivery if you're mailing a letter.
Your billing details are available online or in the PF app. Source: Planet Fitness FAQ → Membership & Billing → “Where can I learn more about the PF billing schedule?” → first sentence.
If a charge has already appeared, use the final-charge checks below.
How to cancel Planet Fitness online
Use the website as your starting point, including when you're on a phone. You can open My Account in your browser even if you've only looked inside the app so far.
Follow these steps:
- Sign in through the official account page. Select “LOG INTO YOUR ACCOUNT,” the entry link on the public page.
- Find the membership you want to end. Check that you're working with the correct account and club, then look for an available cancellation option in membership management.
- Check the end date and final charges. Look for when the membership will end and whether anything remains to pay. If either is unclear, ask the club to confirm the date and explain any remaining charge.
- Complete the cancellation prompts. Read each selection before submitting. Save any resulting confirmation and use the completion checklist to identify missing information.
If you're offered a freeze or another alternative, ask what it changes before accepting it: Does the membership end or remain open? Are there charges during the pause? When would billing resume? Choose based on those terms and your intended outcome.
If you can't continue online, check the missing-option FAQ or use the in-person or mail route below.
Older online advice, such as this 2024 tutorial at 0:30, may suggest transferring your membership to California first. PF's published cancellation instructions don't list a transfer as a prerequisite. Source: Planet Fitness FAQ → Membership & Billing → Show More → “How do I manage my membership?” → paragraph beginning “To end your membership.”
Use the documented routes and seek account-specific help instead of changing your club or address just to expose a button.
How to cancel Planet Fitness in person
Before visiting your home club, ask what identification to bring. Have your member name and membership identifier ready if available.
At the club, tell staff you want to cancel and follow the club's cancellation procedure. Ask for a dated written record, the effective end date, and an explanation of any remaining charge.
If staff say the request is handled but give you no record, ask for written confirmation. Use the completion checklist to track any missing details.
How to cancel Planet Fitness by mail
If you've moved away or can't visit your home club, prepare a written cancellation request and mail it to that club.
Verify your home club's mailing address before sending anything. The Planet Fitness club finder can help locate club details; search for the actual club on your membership rather than relying on automatically suggested locations. Confirm the address and any notice requirements with that club.
Use this sample letter as a starting point, and check with your club for any required details.
Date: [Date]
To: Planet Fitness [Home club name and mailing address]
Please cancel my Planet Fitness membership at the earliest date permitted under my agreement.
Member name: [Your name]
Membership identifier, if available: [Identifier]
Please confirm in writing when you received this request and when my membership will end. For any remaining charge, please give the amount, reason, and billing date. Please also confirm the last date I may use the club.
Contact details for your reply: [Your email or mailing address]
Signed: [Your name and signature]
Don't add your full card number or bank-account details to this template. Ask the club how to provide any additional identification it needs securely.
Keep a copy of the completed letter. Consider a mailing option that provides a delivery record, and save it with your copy. Check the billing dates above when deciding when to send it.
A delivery record shows when the letter arrived. After delivery, ask the club to confirm when your membership ends and whether you owe anything more.
How to check that your cancellation is complete
Save your request and confirmation together so you can check the dates if another charge appears. Use this checklist to spot missing details:
- Correct membership: Does the confirmation identify the account and club you intended to cancel?
- Request date: Do you have a dated submission record or acknowledgment of receipt?
- Effective end date: Has the club stated when the membership ends?
- Final billing: Do you know whether an amount remains, why it is due, and when it will be charged?
- Remaining access: If you plan to visit again, has the club confirmed your last access date?
If your account says “cancel scheduled,” ask the club to confirm what that status means for your membership. Don't infer a last access date or a zero balance from the status alone.
Save any confirmation email, document, or screenshot outside the account. If the screen still asks you to review or submit the request, complete any remaining submission step and look for confirmation. If you have no final confirmation, ask the club whether it received the request and whether anything remains to complete it.
What to do if you're charged after canceling
Compare any later charge with your agreement and cancellation records. Identify what it covers, then ask the club to explain any mismatch.
Check what the charge covers
Ask whether the charge is for monthly dues, an annual fee, an early buyout, an overdue balance, or an error. Keep an overdue balance separate from a buyout when reviewing the answer.
Use this worksheet to put the request, charge, and club's explanation on one timeline:
| Record | Your details |
|---|---|
| Request sent or submitted | __________ |
| Receipt acknowledged or delivery recorded | __________ |
| Confirmed membership end date | __________ |
| Charge date, amount, and statement description | __________ |
| Club's explanation of the charge | __________ |
| Part of the agreement or confirmation supporting it | __________ |
If the explanation is simply “cancellation fee,” ask which type of charge it is and request the breakdown. If you're offered a later payment date, ask whether only the due date changes or whether the amount changes too.
Raise an unexplained charge with the club or bank
Contact the home club with your confirmation, timeline, and the charge details. Identify the mismatch and ask for an explanation or correction in writing. Keep a record of the response and any promised follow-up date. Select your club on Planet Fitness's contact page to find help with your membership.

Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel my Planet Fitness membership online?
Yes. Planet Fitness lists online cancellation through its website member portal, with procedures that may vary by location. Source: Planet Fitness FAQ → Membership & Billing → Show More → “How do I manage my membership?” → paragraph beginning “To end your membership.”
Start with the online cancellation steps.
Is canceling Planet Fitness hard?
It depends on whether you can access your account, submit the request, and get a clear end date and final bill. If one step stalls, use another route above and ask the club what you still need to do. The confirmation checklist helps you track the outcome.
Can I cancel before my Planet Fitness contract ends?
Yes, PF's guidance allows for ending a minimum-term membership early with a buyout. Source: Planet Fitness FAQ → Membership & Billing → Show More → “How do I manage my membership?” → final paragraph.
Compare your term's end date with your preferred cancellation date, then ask the club for the total remaining cost before deciding. See the fee answer below.
Does Planet Fitness require a 12-month commitment?
Not every membership does. The Fort Myers membership offers include a no-commitment option: PF BLACK CARD® → No Commitment.
Look at the commitment length in your own signed agreement, because an offer at another club doesn't establish your terms. Paying monthly doesn't by itself mean your agreement has no minimum term.
Do I need to give a reason to cancel Planet Fitness?
PF's published cancellation instructions don't list a required excuse. Source: Planet Fitness FAQ → Membership & Billing → Show More → “How do I manage my membership?” → paragraph beginning “To end your membership.”
You can state plainly that you want to end your membership. If you're requesting a special exception or fee waiver, ask what eligibility and documentation apply to that request.
Is there a fee to cancel Planet Fitness?
PF states a $58 buyout for ending a minimum-term agreement early. Source: Planet Fitness FAQ → Membership & Billing → Show More → “How do I manage my membership?” → final paragraph.
Ask the club to list any monthly dues, annual fee, buyout, or overdue balance separately on your final bill.
Do I legally have to pay a cancellation fee?
Whether a fee is enforceable depends on your agreement and applicable law. For example, New York's Attorney General says contracts that violate its Health Club Services Act are unenforceable; that is a state-specific protection. Source: New York AG, Health clubs and gyms → Contract protections → final paragraph, after the bond-checking instructions.
Ask the club to identify the part of your agreement that allows the charge, and seek help from your state consumer-protection office if you dispute it.
Why did I get charged $39 from Planet Fitness?
You can't tell what the charge covers from the amount alone. Compare its date and description with your agreement and billing history, then ask the club for an itemized explanation.
Don't assume $39 is a standard annual fee: the Fort Myers PF Black Card offer checked for this guide lists a $49 annual fee plus applicable taxes. Source: Fort Myers membership offers → PF BLACK CARD® → See Offer Details → annual-fee paragraph. Your own terms may differ.
Why won't Planet Fitness let me cancel online?
A missing button or error doesn't tell you why online cancellation isn't working. For login help, open PF's account-help FAQ → Mobile App → “Why can't I sign in to the Planet Fitness app?” For a missing password-reset email, use Mobile App → “I selected the ‘Forgot password’ link, but I am not receiving an email to reset my password. What should I do now?”
If you arrived through an old link, retry through My Account. If you're signed in but still cannot cancel, save the error and date, ask your home club for help, and use the in-person or mail route.
Can a gym refuse to cancel your membership?
Check the club's reason for refusing against your agreement and applicable cancellation rights. New York, for example, specifies cancellation rights and methods gyms must offer. Source: New York AG, Health clubs and gyms → Contract protections → cancellation-rights bullets and the bullet beginning “Your health club must allow you to cancel.”
Ask the club for its reason in writing and take the agreement and request records to your state consumer-protection office if the issue remains unresolved.
Can I tell my bank to stop Planet Fitness charges?
Yes. Tell Planet Fitness and your bank that you're withdrawing permission for automatic bank debits. This is called revoking authorization. Follow up with both in writing and keep copies. Ask the bank whether a stop-payment order is also needed and what it costs. This does not cancel the membership or erase amounts owed, so handle the cancellation request separately. Source: CFPB automatic-payment guide → “Call and write the company”; “Call and write your bank or credit union”; “Your bank or credit union might use stop payment orders”; and “Cancelling an automatic payment does not cancel what you owe.”
Can I sue Planet Fitness for not letting me cancel?
You may have a legal claim, depending on the facts and applicable law. New York's Attorney General identifies small-claims remedies for violations of its health-club law. Source: New York AG, Health clubs and gyms → Contract protections → final paragraph, after the bond-checking instructions.
Before filing, check local court rules and your agreement's dispute terms. A contract may require arbitration before or instead of a lawsuit. Arbitration resolves a dispute outside court. Source: California Courts, Before you sue someone → “Do you have a contract that says you can't sue or requires you to sue in a certain place?” → arbitration bullet.
A local consumer attorney can help assess the route that fits your situation.
Can a gym sue you for not paying?
A creditor or debt collector may sue over an unpaid membership debt. That doesn't mean the amount claimed is valid or that every unpaid bill leads to a lawsuit. If you receive court papers, respond by their deadline even if you dispute the debt. Source: CFPB, What should I do if I’m sued by a debt collector or creditor? → opening paragraphs and “Why it’s important to respond when sued by a debt collector.” For legal help, see “Consult an attorney to learn more about your debt collection rights” on that page.
